Effects of the Project

The Lions Blood Bank satisfies a basic human need - the need to save valuable human lives from the jaws of death whenever possible, the need to inculcate a sense of dedication in persons to take up this service and a sense of commitment that it is very much their duty to give not merely some portion of time and treasure but also a small portion of their own blood. In spite of our large population there was a dearth for blood, the only source being the healthy men and women. The need for blood donation will continue with accidents and other causes demanding blood transfusion to the victims.

Besides providing an ideal atmosphere for the donors, it employs dedicated personnel trained in blood banking procedures to collect the blood, process the same by accepted modern techniques and issue the same on requisition from registered medical practitioners, nursing homes and hospitals. Presently a processing charge of Rs 500 per unit is levied to defray the cost of the consumables etc used irrespective of the rarity of the group or the time of the day or night it is required. This charge is waived to patients undergoing treatment in Government/Corporation Hospitals and when it is issued to deserving people on proper identification and recommendations.

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu boasts of excellent hospitals and eminent surgeons who have done pioneering work in the field of human organ transplantations and cardiac ailments. Patients not only from Chennai but also from other states in India and from countries like Tanzania, Australia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, and UAE come to Chennai for medical treatment such as open-heart surgery, multi organ transplantation etc. It is estimated that over 6,000 such surgeries take place every year. The consequential impact of this is heavy demand for quality blood / components.

Benefits of the Project
The beneficiaries of this project will be the patients from around 400 hospitals and nursing homes situated in and around the peripherals of Chennai city who are in need of quality blood for surgeries and treatments. It is planned to extend this facility to the institutions in the suburbs also.
